On September 10th, 2019, the opening ceremony of the Department of Linguistics of BLCU was held in the Teaching Integrated Building 329. Professor Liu Li, President of BLCU, Franco Amadei, Cultural Counselor of the Italian embassy in China, professor Lu Jianming, expert representatives of the Department of Chinese Literature of Peking University, professor Lu Bingfu and associate professor Wang Chong attended the ceremony. Also present were assistant President of BLCU, director of human resources Yu Youxue, assistant President, dean of graduate school Guo Peng, director of academic affairs Wang Ruifeng, director of student affairs Huang Zhan and deputy director of scientific research Liu Zhijing. The opening ceremony was presided over by the head of the Department of Linguistics, professor Si Fuzhen. The staff and students of the Department of Linguistics participated in the opening ceremony.

At the ceremony, a video of the construction of the Department of Linguistics prepared by graduate students was played.

President Liu Li mentioned in the speech that though all this was hard-won, the Department of Linguistics of BLCU welcomed its first anniversary and ushered in its 15 undergraduate freshmen. He also said that the Department of Linguistics is still in the period of pioneering. Prehistorical things must be done with prehistorical powers. He expressed his belief that the Department of Linguistics would continue to grow through concerted efforts.

Professor Lu Jianming also said his expectations to the freshmen, stressing the importance of current linguistic research and pointing out that it is not an easy task. He also inculcated three suggestions in the students : first, “diligent”. Diligent to read, listen carefully in class and diligent in thinking; second, “perseverance”. In the face of learning and research, continue to go forward and break through the difficulties; third, “questioning”, never be ashamed to ask questions.

Franco Amadei is the cultural counselor of the Italian embassy in China. As an outstanding alumnus of BLCU, he thanked his Alma mater for its cultivation. He also said that the current linguistic research is only “the tip of the iceberg”, which has many mysteries to be discovered. Therefore, the students of Department of Linguistic are lucky. They should have a sense of responsibility and a sense of mission, working hard to improve their own abilities. Finally, he reminded students that “learning without thinking is useless, thinking without learning is dangerous”.

On behalf of all the freshmen of the department of linguistics, Cao Tiancheng first made a representative speech. Then she performed the poem “Chasing dreams at BLCU” with Jia Mengxi, expressing the determination of the freshmen to live up to their mission, study hard and realize their dreams.

At the end of the ceremony, Dr. Sun Xiaochen, the young teacher of the department of linguistics, gave a brief teaching demonstration for the guests and freshmen in the language and human brain science laboratory which was under construction. It aroused great interest and enthusiasm from the students.
