The Third International Workshop on Syntactic Cartography was Held at BLCU

The Third International Workshop on Syntactic Cartography was held at BLCU from 26th to 27th, October 2019. More than 60 scholars from the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, Japan, Switzerland, Brazil, South Korea, Hungary, etc. attended the conference.

At 8:00 am on the 26th, the Third International Workshop on Syntactic Cartography was started with a melodious performance of Chinese traditional musical instruments and a brief review of the previous International Workshop on Syntactic Cartography. Eric Haeberli, professor of linguistics at the University of Geneva, delivered a welcoming speech.

This conference altogether arranged five keynote speeches, six invited speeches, ten general session speeches, and thirty-seven parallels speeches. Professor Luigi Rizzi, a renowned linguist and one of the founders of syntactic cartography theory at the University of Siena in Italy, presented a report entitled Types of Freezing and Consequences of Maximality; Professor Andrea Moro of the University School for Advanced Studies IUSS - Pavia presented a speech entitled Symmetry in Syntax; Professor Ian Roberts of the Downing College, University of Cambridge presented a speech entitled Domains and Parameters; Professor Marcel Den Dikken of Academy of Science, Hungary, delivered a speech entitled “High and Low Applicatives of Unaccusatives: Dependent Case and the Phase”; Professor Anna Maria Di Sciullo of the Department of Linguistics, UQAM & NYU, presented a report entitled Minimal Maps: Cartography and Minimalism. Invited speeches were also given by Professor Wei-Tien Dylan Tsai of National Tsing Hua University, Professor Sze-Wing Tang of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Adriana Belletti of the University of Siena, Professor Eric Haeberli and Professor Genova Puskas of the University of Geneva and Professor Jie Xu of the University of Macau. They reported and disccused the latest achievements in syntactic cartography and other related theoretical studies.

We also invited Professor Yoshio Endo of the Kanda University of International Studies, Dr. Giuseppe Samo of the Beijing Language and Culture University, Professor Kwang-Sup Kim of the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Dr. Xuhui Hu of the Peking University, Assistant Professor John Joseph Perry of the University of Hong Kong, Dr. Masatoshi Honda of the Yokohama College of Commerce, Professor Myung Kwan Park of the Dongguk University, Professor Daeho Chung of the Hanyang University, Professor Honghua He of the Tsinghua University, Professor Zhongru Xiong, Professor Fuzhen Si and Professor Binnfu Lu of the Beijing Language and Culture University. In addition, young scholars from Xiangtan University, Tianjin Normal University, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Beijing Language University, Guangdong University of Technology, China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing), Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Sun Yat-sen University, Beijing Institute of Technology, Nanjing University, Nanjing Normal University,Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia, University of Campinas, Georgetown University and Leiden University also participated in the conference.

  

At 7:00 p.m. on the 27th, the closing ceremony of the Third International Workshop on Syntactic Cartography began. The closing speeches were delivered by Professor Luigi Rizzi of the University of Siena and Professor Wei-Tien Dylan Tsai of the National Tsing Hua University. The two-day conference attracted wide attention in the academic circles at home and abroad. The participants made full exchanges on syntactic cartography and related theoretical research, which played a positive role in promoting the development of syntactic cartography.
