“Reading Jane Eyre via imperative sentences”-- Associate Professor Changsong Wang lectured on Lecture Series on Theoretical Linguistics hosted by the Department of Linguistics

On October 14th, 2020, at 7:00 PM, the ninth lecture of theoretical Linguistics series of the Department of Linguistics was held on the online platform of Tencent Meeting. This lecture invited Associate Professor Changsong Wang who comes from Beijing Institute of Technology. The title of the lecture is Reading Jane Eyre via imperative sentences. Professor Fuzhen Si, dean of the Department of Linguistics, presided over the lecture, which attracted the attention and participation of many teachers and students.

 

The lecture originated from a paper jointly written by Associate Professor Changsong Wang and Yisong Li, a student of Beijing Institute of Technology

Associate Professor Changsong Wang started with the origin of the title of this lecture, focusing on the interpretation of “imperative sentence” in the novel Jane Eyre. This paper presents the literary exploration from the perspective of linguistics through case statistics, data analysis and other methods, combined with the theories of formal linguistics and functional linguistics.

In the lecture, Associate Professor Changsong Wang talked about the application of linguistic theory in analyzing literary works, which provided a new way of thinking for linguistic research and literary works interpretation. At the same time, the combination of teachers’ research direction and students’ interests also played a positive role in the interaction between teachers and students and the cultivation of students.

Finally, Dr. Changsong Wang had an online interaction with the teachers and students who participated in this activity, and the lecture came to a successful conclusion in the heated discussion. This lecture has promoted the academic exchange between scholars and stimulated young students’ interest in linguistics.
