This lecture will introduce some of the big-picture debates concerning parameterisation and how they pertain to the Verb Second property. It will provide an overview of classic analyses of V2, alongside other core word-order properties, and how they have changed over the past four decades. The study of word-order change in Romance has accrued a truly vast literature. This lecture will provide an introductory overview of the major questions that have been asked and some of the major empirical and theoretical advances to date. Topics covered will include the null-subject property, V2, scrambling, and the clitic pronominal system. Medieval Romance and the V2 Typology Building on the contents of Lecture 1 and 2, this lecture will provide a detailed analysis of the syntax of Medieval Romance, suggesting that a number of modifications have to be made to the classic analysis of V2 to accommodate the data. This analysis, in turn, paves the way for a new understanding of a number of aspects of diachronic Romance syntax. Evaluating Contact-Induced Change in Old French 时间:6月24日 下午2:00-4:00 2:00-4:00 PM, June 24, 2024. A prominent position in the literature is that a number of properties of Old French syntax should be attributed to contact-induced change with Germanic languages. In this lecture, we will explore the details of this hypothesis, and consider a range of evidence from historical sources as well as contemporary acquisitional studies, as to why it should be refuted. This penultimate lecture will attempt to bridge a number of major questions in Modern Romance syntax with those why have been posed for historical stages of the Romance languages. We will spend some time considering these links, before developing the hypothesis that two typological groups of Romance languages spoken today should be identified: ‘Conservative Romance’ which shows broad syntactic continuity with many properties of Early Medieval Romance, and a ’Transitional Group’ which shows a degree of continuity, albeit alongside important micro-and nano parametric points of distinction. In the final lecture, we will focus on two groups of Romance languages which have diverged the furthest from the Early Medieval Romance languages. These Gallo-, Italo-, and Ibero-Romance varieties spoken in Romance-spoken Europe, North Africa, and North and South America are characterised by major divergence from what we term a ‘conservative Romance norm’. A variety of diagnostics will be considered for placement within a Romance typology, pertaining to verb movement, the makeup of the subject later, and the nature of left-peripheral topicalisation and focalisation.
