Symmetrical Shapes and Their Transformation at the C/I.  Interface

摘要：

We present a framework according to which the C/I interface contains a few sets of instructions related to the expression of a small number of virtual symmetrical semantic shapes.

We show that these symmetrical shapes can be associated to the mental representation of  a larger number of more complex asymmbsetrical shapes, which are then analyzed as the result of transformations of more basic shapes.

Developing an analysis of mundurucu classifiers, we show how such a framework enables us to explain how a single classifier related to the expression of a single symmetrical (round) shape, as in awewe-da ('beetle') where da makes reference to a round and hard object, can also be used to express various asymmetrical shapes, as in mutaxi-da ('manioc root'), where da makes reference to an elongated tuber.

We claim that the realization of the asymmetrical shapes themselves is not represented within the language faculty, in line with an internalist view of semantics, but should be understood as a performance phenomenon.
