The Department of Linguistics Held 2020 Academic Research and Thesis Writing Experience-Sharing Session

On November 4th, the Department of Linguistics held an academic research and essay writing experience-sharing session in Room 116, South of the main building. The experience-sharing was hosted by 19th-grade graduate student Xiaoxia Yao. The sharers also included 19th-grade undergraduates Mengxi Jia and Xinyi Xing. The head of the department Professor Fuzhen Si, counselor Xue Meng, and all 19th and 20th-grade undergraduate students participated the session.

First, Xiaoxia Yao, a 19th-grade graduate student, shared her experience and introduced to the students that university is an important stage for accumulating energy for the next stage and sufficient experience for the future. Later, she discussed about the knowledge reserve, reading method and essay writing, highlighted the important role of identity conversion awareness and knowledge attitude conversion as a freshman, and proposed that an interdisciplinary knowledge system should be constructed consciously. With the goal of realizing internalization and output, the students should consciously link the concepts of various disciplines into a knowledge network, and thus knowledge of various aspects is widely acquired. She mentioned that “learning knowledge is not to expand memory, but to build your own knowledge system to integrate your own cognition in the process of obtaining information”, which inspired all the students present.

Then, 19th-grade undergraduate Mengxi Jia shared his experience of how to allocate one’s energy in self-study and class learning. He mentioned that self-learning and thinking are important, but it is more important to take the GPA of professional courses into account first. Xinyi Xing, a 19th-grade undergraduate student, clearly introduced the points to be noted before writing the thesis, while writing the thesis, and after completing the thesis from the three perspectives of knowledge reserve, dialectical thinking and thesis standard, emphasizing on the learning of the professional courses and English courses. As a foundation, reading more extracurricular books can also provide rich inspiration for ones professional study. After listening to these two students sharing, all the students present felt benefited a lot.

At the end of the sharing session, Professor Fuzhen Si, the dean of the department, made a concluding speech for all the students, praising the sharing session as a platform which showed the academic level of the students in the Department of Linguistics. Professor Si mentioned that teachers should function and a guide for students to discover and explore their own shining points. The achievements of many Nobel Prize winners began their exploration in the university years. She encouraged all the students to give full play to their professional knowledge and exhort them to constantly think about themselves and discover their self-worth, and then to discover the subtlety of human brain and lay the foundation for a lifetime of happiness .

This experience-sharing session fully demonstrated the high efficiency, high quality, and high level of the students in the Department of Linguistics. The outstanding performance of the students has laid a solid foundation for building a "linguistic dream team" that leads the trend of linguistics.
